About the Candidate

My name is Victor A. Swanson, and I am running for the Democratic nomination for Illinois’ 14th Congressional District.

I am not a politician, lawyer, or millionaire.  I am not beholden to any special interest group.  My concerns are your concerns.  I am a hard working middle class individual who comes from a union household.

I grew up in Yorkville, where my family had resided for over a hundred years.  I joined the United States Navy and served my country with pride, earning the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.  After leaving the Navy, I went to Illinois State University and studied social studies secondary education.  Upon graduation, I began teaching at an area high school, and have been teaching there for the past 17 years. While teaching, I earned a Master’s Degree at Northern Illinois University in Curriculum and Instruction.

My interest in politics started while growing up in Kendall County and watching my grandmother’s involvement with the local Republican Party.  I was raised in an environment of political awareness and discussion, and public service was always emphasized.   While being raised in a traditionally Republican household I, like many Americans, found myself disagreeing more and more with the Republican Party.  I have spent my entire adult life as a proud Democrat.

My family and I live in Batavia.  My wife Karen is also a public school teacher, teaching 5th grade in a school district near the 14th Congressional district.  We have two children, Ellie who is 9 years old and Carter who is 8 years old.  They are in second and third grade in the Batavia Public Schools.
